STUFFED DONUTS
Stuffed donuts, also known as filled or filled donuts, are a delicious variation of the classic fried or baked dough confection. These donuts are typically filled with various sweet fillings, adding an extra layer of flavor and texture. Here's a basic recipe for making stuffed donuts:
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
For Filling:
- Your choice of jam, jelly, custard, chocolate, or other sweet fillings
For Coating:
- Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar (optional)
Instructions:
Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the softened butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Forming Donuts: Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a round cutter to cut out donut shapes. Place a small amount of filling in the center of half of the rounds, then top with the remaining rounds, sealing the edges.
Second Rise: Place the filled donuts on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30-60 minutes.
Frying: Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large, deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the donuts a few at a time and fry until golden brown on each side. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Coating: Roll the warm donuts in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar if desired.
Serve: Allow the stuffed donuts to cool slightly before serving.
Feel free to experiment with different fillings to suit your taste preferences. Enjoy your homemade stuffed donuts!
